HEMMERSBACH Rhino Force

We are The Social Purpose IT Company: With our Direct Actions, we fight problems where authorities fail. Hemmersbach Rhino Force is an anti-poaching unit that saves rhinos in Southern Africa from extinction.

OUR THREE STEPS APPROACH TO PROTECTING RHINOS

PROTECT RHINOS

For decades, rhinos have been hunted by crime syndicates for their horns, which are then sold on the black market. Today, they are one of the most endangered species on the planet – that’s why we protect them. Hemmersbach Rhino Force fights poachers with night vision, stealth boats, drones, and if necessary also uses armed force. Patrolling the bush, our rangers risk their lives every day to ensure the rhinos’ and other wildlife’s survival.

PRESERVE RHINO GENES

To preserve the current genetic diversity of rhinos, Hemmersbach Rhino Force has started the Cryovault project. We collect rhino sperm, egg cells as well as other biological material from live and deceased individuals. All samples are cryopreserved in our biobank, which will soon be the largest genetic reservoir for African rhinoceros in the world. The frozen reproductive material enables assisted breeding – the ultimate safety net against extinction

SUPPORT LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Hemmersbach Rhino Force also improves the living conditions of people in Southern Africa, offering them alternatives to poaching. By cleaning up the trash and waste in communities (see our Marara Ladies project further below), we reduce the risk of diseases among inhabitants and animals. We also restore and equip schools while supporting initiatives of local chiefs.

OUR BIGGEST SUCCESS
SAVING RHINOS

In 2019, we reduced the number of poached African rhinos in our protected area by more than 80% – an achievement of which we are extremely proud!

INSIDE RHINO FORCE

MOVING GIANTS
Resettling 100 Wild Elephants

In early 2018, we leased the former hunting area Rifa (800 km²) in Zimbabwe, where we banned hunting to give African rhinos and other wildlife a safe home. From 9th September until end of October 2018, Hemmersbach Rhino Force resettled 100 wild elephants from the Sango Wildlife Conservancy to Rifa. Using cranes, trucks, and a helicopter, we relocated them more than 700 km to ensure they would not be culled. This was an important step toward long-term wildlife conservation.

MARARA LADIES
Collecting Trash for a Better Tomorrow

With our Rhino Force, we also make sure to help the local population by providing them with alternatives to poaching. That’s why we founded the Marara Recycling project. The Marara Ladies (Marara means rubbish in Shona) collect trash every day, a service that is not provided by their local government. This way they are reducing the risk of cholera, typhoid and other diseases while also saving wildlife at the same time.

hISTORY

WHY HEMMERSBACH RHINO FORCE?

When our CEO Ralph Koczwara visited South Africa several years ago, he learned about the rhino wars. Crime syndicates hunt rhinos for their horns – the illegal wildlife trade is highly lucrative. This has attracted countless poachers and brought the rhino close to extinction. The South African wildlife rangers could not stop the syndicates, so Ralph decided to take action and created the anti-poaching unit Rhino Force. Today, our elite soldiers protect rhinos with drones, stealth vessels, night vision and other state-of-the-art technology. But Hemmersbach Rhino Force also greatly improved the lives of countless South Africans.

Working for a purpose

“Time and again I’m amazed by the impact we have on people and wildlife. But still, it’s my colleagues – their sacrifice, passion and comradery, their belief in the organisation and each other: That makes the work great.”
